Relocating to northern Utah? Here are the things locals forget to mention.
- Addresses are a grid. “1300 East 500 South” tells you exactly where you are relative to a city center. Once it clicks, you’ll never need GPS for directions.
- Inversion season is real. In winter, cold air can trap haze in the valleys. Homes on the benches often sit above it, and a good air purifier helps everywhere.
- Canyon traffic is its own rush hour. On powder days, ski traffic can back up early. Living near a canyon mouth pays off.
- Winter tires matter. All-season tires get you around town, but snow tires make canyon trips and steep driveways far less stressful.
- Sprinklers are seasonal. Most systems are winterized in fall. Ask about secondary water when you buy; many cities have it.
- Basements are common. Many homes have finished or unfinished basements, which is great for extra living space and storage.
- The mountains are close. Most of the Wasatch Front is a short drive from a trailhead.
